Rishabh Pant vs Shreyas Iyer leadership : Pant’s Pre-Auction Jibe Backfires as Shreyas Iyer’s Brilliant Leadership Wins High Praise from Ricky Ponting 2025

Shreyas Iyer Outshines Rishabh Pant with Tactical Brilliance and Leadership Growth

Rishabh Pant vs Shreyas Iyer : About a month ago, after the IPL auction, Rishabh Pant was heard saying he was scared that the Punjab Kings might pick him. He was eventually bought for ₹27 crore. Not just recently, but perhaps in IPL history, no player has ever taken such a direct jab at a team. However, due to a lack of maturity, Pant made this unnecessary and harsh remark.

As often said, arrogance leads to downfall, and Pant’s recent performances seem to reflect that. On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer is setting an example by responding to criticism through politeness, intelligence, and hard work. One player (Pant) gets called back to the national team after recovering from injury, while another (Iyer), despite being dropped and removed from the BCCI central contracts, has made his return by winning domestic trophies in Ranji, IPL, and other leagues. Now, Iyer is not only leading Punjab but is also back in the national setup and the central contract list.

The contrast between Pant and Iyer’s captaincy style was once again highlighted by Punjab Kings coach Ricky Ponting. In this IPL, Shreyas Iyer’s Punjab team has defeated Pant’s Lucknow Super Giants twice and pushed them to the edge. After the match, Ponting praised Iyer’s sharp thinking and captaincy strategy — something that might make KKR management regret losing him.

Ponting said, “After Priyansh Arya got out early, it was Shreyas who was supposed to come in. But he decided to send Josh Inglis at No. 3 instead. The reason? Mayank Yadav usually bowls short balls early in the innings, and Shreyas felt Inglis would handle those better on this pitch. And that’s exactly what happened — Inglis was pulling those short balls from Mayank.”

Josh Inglis scored a rapid 30 from just 14 deliveries. Talking about team tactics, Ponting added, “Our batting lineup is deep — we’ve got Omarzai at No. 9. That gives the top order a lot of freedom. If we can score around 70 runs in the powerplay, the momentum swings in our favour. I challenged Prabhsimran and Priyansh to go for big scores. Although Priyansh missed out on a hundred, he played brilliantly. Also, Arshdeep Singh is gradually becoming more dangerous with the ball.”
