Rohit Sharma Captaincy Journey : In a surprising development, Rohit Sharma made the official announcement on Wednesday of his retirement from Test cricket, ending the ongoing speculation around his red-ball future. His decision comes just weeks before India’s much-anticipated five-match Test series against England, set to begin on June 20, leaving the Indian selectors with the urgent task of appointing a new Test captain.
Rohit stepped down from T20 internationals after leading India to a memorable World Cup victory last year. Now, with his exit from Tests, he will only continue as the captain in the One-Day International (ODI) format.
Sharma bows out of the longest format as one of India’s most dependable batters. In his 67-Test career, he scored 4,301 runs, including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries, at an average of 40.57.
Announcing his retirement on social media, Rohit wrote,
“Hello everyone. I am retiring from Test cricket. Representing my country in whites has been the greatest honour of my existence. Thank you fascinated about the love and guide through the years.”
He added that he will continue to represent India in ODIs.
In a recent interview with journalist Bimal Kumar, Rohit opened up about his journey and the doubts he once had regarding his leadership opportunities.
“Yes, I used to think that way. People often want a young captain who can lead the team for the next 10–15 years. So I felt I might never get that chance. But I’m eternally grateful that I did.”
As Rohit steps, Cricket (BCCI) of India will now have to appoint a new red-ball captain. Currently, Young opener Shubman is considered to be the next runner for the role.
Reflecting on his leadership, Rohit stated:
“I know I won’t be captain for ten years. But whatever time I do get, I want to make the most of it. No matter what, I must bring out the best in myself.”
My only request will be please don’t silently retire from ODI cricket like this through a instagram story.

Rohit had missed the opening test of the Australia series in Perth last year because of the birth of his second child. In his absence, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL opened the Rahul laps. Upon return in the second test, Rohit fought in the middle order, but resumed opening tasks in the boxing day test. Later, he chose the Sydney test on personal reason.
During his captaincy, India had a mixed run in tests. As they won the opening test of the Border-Gavaskar Cup during Jasprit Bumrah’s stand-in lead, the team finally lost the series. Previously, India also got a laundry list of 0-3 at home against New Zealand in a glorious series under Rohit’s lead.
As India is now looking at a future without one of their modern test styles, the focus changes to the next generation of leaders – and how they will continue Rohit Sharma’s heritage in the whites.
