Digvesh Singh Rathi Suspended : Lucknow Super Giants leg-spinner Digvesh Singh Rathi has been suspended for one match and fined 50% of his match fee following a heated on-field altercation with Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Abhishek Sharma during their recent IPL 2025 clash at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
The flashpoint occurred after Abhishek, who had scored a quick-fire half-century, was dismissed and appeared visibly upset with Digvesh’s animated send-off. Words were exchanged between the two players before officials and teammates quickly intervened to defuse the situation.
Repeat Offence Results in Suspension
In an official statement released on Tuesday morning, the IPL confirmed that Digvesh had been found guilty of a Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 of the IPL Code of Conduct. This is the third such violation for the 25-year-old this season.
As a result of this breach, two additional demerit points have been added to Digvesh’s record, taking his total to five. Earlier in the season, he was penalized for separate incidents against Punjab Kings (April 1) and Mumbai Indians (April 4).
Under IPL rules, accumulating five demerit points results in an automatic one-match suspension. Digvesh will therefore be unavailable for LSG’s upcoming match against Gujarat Titans on Thursday in Ahmedabad.
Celebration Style Under the Scanner
Digvesh’s trademark “notebook” celebration — where he mimics jotting down a batter’s name — has made headlines this season. While it’s been popular among fans, the repeated use of the gesture has drawn criticism for breaching the league’s spirit-of-the-game guidelines. The spinner has already faced multiple fines for his theatrical send-offs.
This is Digvesh’s first season in the IPL after being picked by Lucknow Super Giants during the 2024 mega auction. Although he has shown glimpses of potential, his disciplinary record could be a cause for concern going forward.
Abhishek Sharma Also Fined
Sunrisers opener Abhishek Sharma has also been fined for his involvement in the incident. The left-hander has been docked 25% of his match fee and received one demerit point for breaching Article 2.6, which deals with conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game.
This marks Abhishek’s first offence of the season. Speaking after the match, Abhishek downplayed the altercation and said the players had resolved the matter privately.
“It was just heat-of-the-moment stuff. We’ve spoken since and there are no hard feelings,” Abhishek told reporters.
What Lies Ahead
With the league stage reaching its final stretch, LSG will have to make do without Digvesh in a crucial match. The team will be hoping to keep their campaign alive, while SRH’s win has boosted their playoff hopes.
While intensity and passion are part of the IPL’s charm, the league continues to uphold strict discipline to maintain the integrity of the sport.
