Shubman Gill went through ups and downs in his first examination of captaincy in Test cricket and many mistakes were also seen on their behalf. But Shubman Gill did not stop in batting and he kept breaking some records with every match. The process that Gill started from the first match continued in the fourth match and reached close to a new record. Gill overtook Virat Kohli in terms of most runs as captain on the fourth day of Manchester Test.
Gill leaves Kohli behind
Even before the Manchester Test match, Indian captain Shubman Gill had made many records in the first 3 matches of the series. Especially in the first and second Tests, Gill had contributed significantly in maintaining Team India in the series while raining runs. He failed in the third Test played at Lord’s, but still he had won the record of the most runs in a series as a captain in England.
Shubman also continued in the Manchester Test on the same sequence of records. He failed in the first innings of this match, but in the second innings, captain Gill played a great innings. Gill, who came to the crease after falling 2 wickets in the first over on the fourth day of the match, scored a great half -century. During this, Gill overtook Virat Kohli (655) in terms of most runs as an Indian captain in a Test series. Kohli made this record against England in 2016.
Captain’s eye on Gavaskar’s record
By the end of the fourth day’s play, Shubman Gill was unbeaten on 78 and thus he got a total of 697 runs in this series. In this list, only the great batsman Sunil Gavaskar was ahead of Gill, who scored 732 runs in 9 innings of the Test series against the West Indies in 1978-79. Gill now has a chance to break this 46 year old record. Not only this, Gill also has a chance to break Sunil Gavaskar’s biggest record. Gavaskar scored 774 runs in the series against the West Indies in 1971, which is a record from India. Gill can break the record in this test or in the next Test.
