India’s first defeat on this ground was received on July 19, 73 years ago, when a fast bowler wreaked havoc on the Indian batsmen.

The Indian team had such a bad condition on the Manchester ground on 19 July 1952. This was the third Test match of Team India on this ground, while Azad Indian team was playing on this ground for the first time. The match started on the 17th and ended on 19 July. Due to rain, England had batting for more than two days in this match and declared 347 runs in their first innings.

Indian batsman ahead of Truman

Then on the third day i.e. on July 19, the batting of Team India came and the stormy fast bowler Fred Truman started from here. Right-handed pacer Truman was only 21 years old at that time and new ones came to the team. He took 15 wickets in the last two matches of the series. But in the first innings of this match, he alone destroyed Indian batting by taking 8 wickets. Team India collapsed for just 58 runs.

All out twice a day

The effect of this was that the Indian team had to come down for batting in the second innings and once again the batsmen kneeled. This time although Truman was able to take only 1 wicket, Alek Bedser took 5 wickets and Tony Lock 4 wickets. Together these two settled the Indian team for just 82 runs. In this way, both innings of India ended in a single day and England defeated the match by a margin of an innings-207 runs. In this way, Truman took a total of 9 wickets in this match and Team India had to face their first defeat on this ground.
