Ranji Trophy 2025-26 format change : The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took an important decision on the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season at the Apex Council meeting on Saturday 14 June. This tournament will be played in two phases from 15 October to 28 February. Regarding the better performance of teams and players, BCCI has now decided that only 1-1 team will be promoted and railing instead of 2 from Elite and Plate Group. Earlier in 2018-19, the BCCI included 9 teams in the Ranji Trophy, including the North East team. However, the quality of cricket domestic competition was very impatient in the quality of cricket.
BCCI took a big decision
BCCI’s Apex Council met on Saturday, which took several decisions. In this, important changes were also announced for the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season. From the new season, instead of the existing two teams, only one team from the Elite Group will be relieved and similarly only one will be promoted from the plate group. The Indian Board revealed in a document, ‘A team will be promoted from 2026-27 session in all multi-day men tournaments (Senior and Junior) and a team will be relected.’
There will be changes in more tournaments
The first phase of the Ranji Trophy will be played from 15 October to 19 November while the second phase will be from 22 January to 1 February. The knockout matches will be held from 6 February to 28 February. The Dilip Trophy tournament will start from August 28 and will be played by 15 September. Regarding this, the BCCI also said, ‘The team will be selected by the zonal selection committee.’
The Iranian cup will be played from October 1 to 5. Plate divisions have been re -included in all one -day competitions including Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (National T20 competition). Till the last session, teams used to play quarter -finals, semi -finals and final matches in the knockout phase, but from this session top teams will get three additional matches in the Super League. The top teams of Group A and B will clash in the final. The lowest six teams of the previous season will be part of the plate group. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will be played from 26 November to 18 December. Along with this, in all the tournaments of the white ball, the team that moved forward from the teams living in the group stage will be decided according to the net run rate.
