In a dramatic match played at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, Rizvi’s late blitz overshadowed a valiant half-century from Shreyas Iyer and a whirlwind cameo from Marcus Stoinis that had earlier propelled Punjab Kings to 206/8 in their 20 overs.

After winning the toss, Delhi skipper Faf du Plessis opted to bowl first on a lively surface. Punjab Kings got off to a shaky start as Priyansh Arya departed early for just 6 runs, falling to a clever delivery from Mustafizur Rahman in the second over. Josh Inglis, coming in at No. 3, wasted no time and smacked 32 runs off just 12 deliveries, including some eye-catching strokes against pace. However, his innings was short-lived, as Bipraj Nigam got him in the final over of the powerplay.

Prabhsimran Singh kept the scoreboard ticking and went after Kuldeep Yadav with a 14-run over, but he too fell shortly after for 28 (18), again to Nigam, who showed great control through the middle overs.

At 97/3 at the halfway mark, Punjab looked well-placed. Shreyas Iyer and Nehal Wadhera steadied the ship, taking the total past 100. But Mukesh Kumar removed Wadhera for 16 in the 12th over, forcing Punjab into a brief period of consolidation.

In the 17th over, Iyer and Stoinis launched a brutal assault on Mukesh Kumar, plundering 25 runs in the over — a turning point in the innings. Iyer reached a well-crafted half-century (53 off 34) and looked poised to finish strong. But Kuldeep Yadav, with a masterstroke of spin bowling, dismissed Iyer and then cleaned up Azmatullah Omarzai in the same over.

Despite the double blow, Stoinis continued his carnage in the 19th over, smashing Mohit Sharma for 22 runs before falling for a stunning 44 off just 16 balls. The late fireworks helped Punjab post a daunting total of 206/8. Mustafizur was the pick of the Delhi bowlers with 3/33, while Kuldeep and Nigam claimed two wickets each.

Rizvi’s Roar: A Star is Born

Chasing 207 was never going to be easy, and Delhi Capitals needed a strong start. While the openers did get off to a decent beginning, it was Karun Nair who provided the backbone to the innings with a composed 44 off 27 balls.

But the real hero of the chase was 21-year-old Sameer Rizvi.

With the required run rate climbing and wickets falling at regular intervals, Rizvi walked in and changed the game in a matter of overs. His strokeplay was fearless — a mixture of textbook technique and raw power. Smashing sixes over midwicket and piercing the gaps with precision, Rizvi took the pressure head-on.

He brought up his fifty in just 22 balls and finished unbeaten on 58 from 25 deliveries, guiding Delhi home with three balls remaining and four wickets in hand.

A Vital Win in the Playoff Race

This win gives Delhi Capitals two crucial points in the business end of the IPL 2025 league stage. For Punjab Kings, despite an imposing total, their bowling failed to contain Delhi’s aggressive lower order, leaving them with questions to answer.

Delhi’s chase was clinical in the end, and Rizvi’s knock will be remembered as one of the standout individual performances of this season.
