Faf du Plessis IPL 2025 : In yet another major setback for Delhi Capitals, veteran South African batter Faf du Plessis has pulled out of the remainder of IPL 2025. Following the suspension and resumption of the tournament, this comes as a massive blow to the franchise which is already grappling with a thinning overseas roster.
As per a report by Cricinfo, du Plessis has officially withdrawn from the rest of the season. He isn’t the only one—fellow South African cricketer Donovan Ferreira has also opted out, further compounding DC’s overseas woes. This development comes hot on the heels of Mitchell Starc and Jake Fraser-McGurk’s earlier exits, leaving Delhi scrambling for international reinforcements.
With just three overseas players left in the squad—Sediqullah Atal, Tristan Stubbs, and Dushmantha Chameera—Delhi Capitals are now staring at a foreign player crisis. The team had roped in Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman as a replacement for Fraser-McGurk, but his participation hangs in the balance as he is yet to receive the necessary No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
This situation has left Delhi in a tight spot. Heading into the crucial final leg of the tournament, the franchise has limited overseas options at its disposal. The IPL rules mandate a maximum of four overseas players in the playing XI, but Delhi may now struggle to even field that many.
Despite having 13 points from 11 matches and still being in contention for a playoff spot, the road ahead has suddenly become a lot bumpier for the Capitals. The departure of experienced players like du Plessis and Starc could significantly affect the team’s performance in high-pressure games.
Delhi had shown promise in the early stages of the season, stringing together some impressive wins. However, their form has dipped in the second half. The absence of key overseas stars now adds to their growing list of concerns. The likes of Axar Patel and KL Rahul (if he is part of the DC setup as suggested, although he is traditionally associated with LSG) will need to shoulder more responsibility, both on and off the field.
The mid-season suspension of IPL 2025 disrupted all franchises to varying degrees, but Delhi Capitals appear to be among the worst hit. Several international players across teams are expected to return home post playoffs to fulfill national commitments, but DC is already feeling the pinch.
As things stand, the franchise may be forced to scout for last-minute replacement signings, a trend several teams are now leaning into. Whether Delhi can plug the holes in time and keep their playoff hopes alive remains to be seen. What’s clear, however, is that they’ll have to do it without some of their biggest stars.
