India A England Tour 2025 : Abhimanyu Easwaran to Lead India A on England Tour 2025

India A England Tour 2025 : In a significant step towards grooming talent for the future, Bengal opener Abhimanyu Easwaran has been named captain of the India A squad for their upcoming tour of England, the BCCI announced on Friday. The 29-year-old right-hander, who is still waiting for his maiden Test cap, will lead the side in two first-class matches against England Lions, to be played at Canterbury and Northampton.

Dhruv Jurel, who recently impressed in his limited Test opportunities, has been appointed vice-captain and will also serve as one of the designated wicketkeepers, alongside Ishan Kishan, who marks a return to the national setup after a long hiatus.

While Easwaran’s leadership appointment shows continued faith from the selectors, it hasn’t come without questions. His recent form, especially during the India A tour to Australia last year, was far from ideal. Scores of 12, 7, 0 and 17 on that tour had raised eyebrows. Yet, the selectors appear keen to back his leadership credentials and domestic experience for this key assignment.

“The Men’s Selection Committee has named the India A squad for the upcoming tour of England, where the team will play two first-class matches against the England Lions… The tour will conclude with a match against Team India (Senior Men),” read the official BCCI statement.

In a notable development, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan will join the squad ahead of the second match, adding depth and class to the batting unit.

The tour also marks a comeback for several well-known faces. Shardul Thakur, Karun Nair, and Ishan Kishan have all earned recalls, with Thakur likely to lend balance with his all-round skills and experience. Karun, who once etched his name into Indian cricket folklore with a triple century, has quietly kept the domestic runs flowing and now finds a fresh opening.

Another name to watch is Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was ruled out of IPL 2025 due to injury. His inclusion signals that the opener is on track in his recovery and could use this tour as a stepping stone for a Test comeback.

The squad also features promising domestic performers like Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, and Sarfaraz Khan, whose red-ball consistency continues to push for higher honours.

The bowling group is a mix of youth and experience with the likes of Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep, and Khaleel Ahmed forming the pace attack, while Manav Suthar, Tanush Kotian, and Harsh Dubey offer spin options.

This England tour offers a crucial opportunity for fringe players to stake a claim ahead of the senior team’s five-match Test series in England later this year. With a mixture of hungry youngsters and experienced domestic stars, all eyes will be on how this India A squad adapts to the swinging, seaming conditions in the UK—a challenge that has historically tested even the best.

For Easwaran, this might be the defining chapter of his long domestic journey. And for others, it could be the platform to launch themselves into India’s Test future.
