India Pulls Out of Asia Cup 2025 : In what could be a major shake-up to the Asian cricket calendar, India is likely to pull out of the Asia Cup 2025, as political tensions with Pakistan continue to escalate. Cricket between the two countries has long been a victim of diplomatic hostilities, and the latest developments may now even impact multi-nation events like the Asia Cup — a tournament that has historically thrived on the high-voltage India vs Pakistan rivalry.
The tournament is supposed to be hosted in India this year, but with the BCCI unwilling to engage in any on-field action involving Pakistan, the event could lose much of its charm — and commercial value. While cricket boards from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan continue to back the competition, it’s no secret that the real blockbuster of the Asia Cup is always the clash between India and Pakistan. Without that, the tournament becomes a much harder sell to broadcasters and sponsors.
Adding to the complexity is the leadership of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). With Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi now serving as the ACC President — a position formerly held by Jay Shah of the BCCI — the Indian board has reportedly expressed discomfort in continuing its participation under current circumstances.
“The Indian team can’t play in a tournament that is organised by the ACC, whose chief is a Pakistani minister. That’s the sentiment of the nation,” a senior BCCI official told The Indian Express. “We have verbally communicated our decision to not participate in the Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup, and we’re reassessing our involvement in future ACC events as well. Everything is in consultation with the Indian government.”
What complicates matters even further is the financial side of the tournament. In 2024, Sony Pictures Networks India secured the broadcast rights to the Asia Cup in a deal worth $170 million, banking heavily on the viewership that comes with an India vs Pakistan showdown. But with India’s potential exit, the value of that deal could plummet — or even be reconsidered altogether.
This isn’t the first time political tensions have disrupted the Asia Cup. The 2023 edition had already seen a hybrid hosting model due to India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan, with most matches shifted to Sri Lanka. India eventually went on to win the tournament in Colombo, while Pakistan crashed out before the final. However, that temporary solution may no longer be viable given the worsening diplomatic climate.
The current situation reflects a broader deterioration in Indo-Pak relations. With rising hostilities along the border and increasing pressure from the Indian public and political leadership to isolate Pakistan on all platforms, sports — particularly cricket — has again been caught in the crossfire.
The impact of India’s potential pullout won’t be limited to just this year’s Asia Cup. It could also have serious implications for the ICC Champions Trophy scheduled for 2025 in Pakistan, a country the Indian team is unlikely to visit under the current geopolitical environment.
There has been no formal statement yet from the BCCI or the ACC, but insiders suggest that a decision could be made official in the coming weeks. If India does step away, the ACC will be forced to rethink the structure of its most high-profile tournament — and possibly its entire calendar.
As it stands, the situation remains tense. Cricket, which has often served as a bridge between these two nations, finds itself once again pushed to the background in the face of politics. For now, fans on both sides of the border can only wait and hope that the spirit of the game finds a way to shine through the darkness.
