IPL 2025 England Players : England stars including Buttler, Bairstow, and Jacks face a scheduling dilemma as IPL resumes after suspension; ECB to reassess NOC permissions
The IPL 2025, which was suspended due to border tensions between India and Pakistan, is set to resume this Saturday. As the tournament reboots with a revised schedule, several English players are preparing to return to India. However, the revised IPL calendar has caused a major scheduling conflict between the players’ franchise commitments and their national duties.
According to ESPNcricinfo, Jonny Bairstow (Royal Challengers Bangalore) will return to India for RCB’s next two matches but is expected to fly back before the team’s final group-stage game in Lucknow. He will join England’s ODI squad preparing for a three-match home series against the West Indies starting May 29 at Edgbaston.
Meanwhile, Will Jacks (Mumbai Indians) and Jos Buttler (Gujarat Titans) have not yet confirmed their travel plans. However, they are also expected to return to India briefly before heading back to join England’s preparations for the international season.
ECB to Review NOCs Issued Before IPL Mega Auction
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had earlier committed that centrally contracted players would be fully available for IPL 2025. This promise influenced several auction bids, including Bairstow’s omission from England’s Test squad for the Zimbabwe series starting May 22. However, the original IPL schedule had the final on May 26, while the rescheduled version now ends on June 3.
In an official statement, the ECB clarified:
“NOCs were issued based on the original IPL dates. Now that the tournament extends beyond the previously agreed timeline, we are reassessing the situation and are in close discussions with BCCI and IPL authorities.”
The revised schedule sees the IPL group stage ending on May 27, followed by playoffs starting May 29, and the final on June 3 — directly clashing with England’s ODI series.
Franchise Status and Player Availability
Despite the conflict, RCB, GT, and MI — all currently in strong contention for playoffs — are expected to lose key English players during crucial matches. This comes as a blow particularly for RCB, who will lose Bairstow during the final group phase. However, two other Englishmen — Liam Livingstone and Phil Salt — will continue in the IPL as they are not part of England’s ODI squad.
Salt is part of the T20I squad for a series starting June 6, three days after the IPL final. Livingstone, meanwhile, has been dropped from all limited-overs squads due to poor form.
West Indies Players Also Affected
The West Indies squad for the ODI series also includes players currently active in IPL 2025. Romario Shepherd (RCB) and Sherfane Rutherford (GT) are both expected to face the same dilemma. There are discussions within Cricket West Indies (CWI) to possibly let them skip the Ireland series (May 21–25) to remain in the IPL.
Additionally, Shamar Joseph (Lucknow Super Giants), who has been included in the ODI squad, is unlikely to reach the playoffs with LSG, making his transition smoother.
ODI Series Critical for World Cup 2027 Qualification
The upcoming England vs. West Indies ODI series holds high importance, as both teams are still battling for direct qualification to the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. With South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia already qualified as hosts, only the top eight ICC-ranked teams will make it directly.
England and West Indies currently sit in eighth and ninth place respectively — making every point count.
Harry Brook to Lead England Amid White-Ball Crisis
Harry Brook will take over as England’s new white-ball captain in the ODI series. With England having lost 10 of their last 11 white-ball matches, including during the India tour and the Champions Trophy, Jos Buttler stepped down from captaincy.
Brook’s leadership will now be under the spotlight, especially as England aims to rebuild ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
