IPL 2025 Playoffs Venues : BCCI Breaks Silence on Dropping Kolkata for IPL 2025 FinalThe business end of IPL 2025 is about to get a fresh twist. The BCCI on Monday confirmed a change in venues for the playoff stage and the grand finale of this year’s tournament, with Mullanpur and Ahmedabad stepping in to host the season’s most crucial matches.
Originally, Hyderabad and Kolkata were set to stage the playoffs. But after the unexpected one-week suspension earlier in the season, the IPL Governing Council has had to reassess its plans — and with unpredictable weather looming in several parts of the country, a shift was inevitable.
Now, it’s Mullanpur’s turn to take the spotlight. The newly built PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh will host Qualifier 1 on Thursday, May 29, featuring the two top-ranked teams at the end of the league stage. The Eliminator, between the third and fourth-placed sides, will follow a day later on Friday, May 30 — also at the same venue.
This will be the first time Mullanpur hosts IPL playoffs — a massive moment for Punjab cricket and local fans, who’ll get a front-row seat to high-stakes action.
Then comes the familiar roar of Ahmedabad. The massive Narendra Modi Stadium — already a proven stage for marquee matches — will host Qualifier 2 on Sunday, June 1, and the big final on Tuesday, June 3.
“The excitement will elevate further as Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket stadium, will host an electrifying Qualifier 2 and the grand Final,” the BCCI said in a press release.
Qualifier 2 will pit the loser of Qualifier 1 against the winner of the Eliminator, with a spot in the final at stake. And come June 3, the last two standing will fight it out under the lights in Ahmedabad for the IPL 2025 crown.
The BCCI said the decision to change venues wasn’t taken lightly.
“The new venues for the Playoffs were decided by the IPL Governing Council keeping in mind the weather conditions and other parameters,” the board noted.
Weather has certainly played its part this season. In fact, it’s already forced a change elsewhere: Match No. 65 between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad, originally scheduled for Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, will now be played in Lucknow due to heavy rain forecasts in the south.
That game will be held at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, a venue that’s becoming a reliable backup when the weather acts up.
“The TATA IPL Match No. 65… has been relocated to Lucknow, due to unfavourable weather conditions in Bengaluru,” confirmed the BCCI.
And to ensure fans don’t miss out on the action due to interruptions, the board has also announced a small but important change: starting Tuesday, May 20, all remaining league-stage matches will have an additional hour built into the playing time to allow for rain delays or unforeseen interruptions.
It’s a smart move — with the playoff race heating up and teams fighting tooth and nail for those top four spots, nobody wants the weather to decide their fate.
As the league stage winds down, the shift in venues will add a fresh dynamic. Teams now have to prepare for slightly unfamiliar conditions, especially at Mullanpur — a new venue with fresh pitches and different dimensions. For fans, it’s an exciting change, especially for those in Punjab who now get to witness the biggest games of the season live.
Ahmedabad, meanwhile, will once again provide a fitting stage for the season finale. With its massive capacity and proven atmosphere, it promises to be a worthy venue for crowning the champions of IPL’s 18th edition.
Revised IPL 2025 Playoff Schedule:
- Qualifier 1: Thursday, May 29 – New PCA Stadium, Mullanpur
- Eliminator: Friday, May 30 – New PCA Stadium, Mullanpur
- Qualifier 2: Sunday, June 1 – Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad
- Final: Tuesday, June 3 – Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad
With the playoffs now mapped out and the title just four matches away, the stage is set. A new venue, a new challenge, and the same ultimate prize: IPL glory.
