IPL 2025 Points Table Update : Punjab Lose to The IPL 2025 playoff race took another dramatic turn on Saturday night after Delhi Capitals stunned Punjab Kings in a crucial encounter. The result left the points table delicately poised, keeping the fight for the top 2 spots wide open.
Punjab’s loss has thrown the door open for Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and even Mumbai Indians to stake their claim at the summit. While the Titans remain comfortably perched at the top, the picture below them is anything but clear.
Punjab Kings Stumble, Miss Chance to Go Top
Had Punjab Kings won their clash against Delhi, they would have moved to 19 points and claimed the top spot in the standings. Instead, Shreyas Iyer’s side faltered at the wrong time, remaining on 17 points and allowing Gujarat Titans to retain their number one position — for now.
Punjab’s defeat also meant there was no change in the top half of the table after Saturday’s match, but the implications were significant. The race for the top two, which brings the advantage of two shots at reaching the final, has become tighter than ever.
Gujarat Titans: Heaven in Their Hands
Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans continue to enjoy a clear path to finishing top of the table. With 18 points from 13 matches and the best net run rate in the league (+0.602), they simply need to win their final league match to lock in the No.1 position.
But a loss in their last fixture could turn the table upside down, especially if Punjab or RCB capitalize. The Titans’ cushion is healthy, but they can’t afford to slip, not with the stakes this high.
RCB: Momentum on Their Side
Royal Challengers Bangalore have quietly built up steam and are now serious contenders for a top-two finish. Currently tied with Punjab on 17 points, RCB trail only slightly on net run rate (+0.255 vs PBKS’s +0.327).
If Faf du Plessis’ men win their final match, they could leapfrog Punjab — but only if PBKS lose. If both teams win, RCB will need a massive win to close the net run rate gap and overtake Punjab.
A loss for Gujarat would further spice up the scenario, potentially allowing RCB to sneak into the top spot, provided their net run rate improves significantly. It’s a tight rope walk, but RCB are very much in the game.
Mumbai Indians: High Hopes and Complex Calculations
Sitting at fourth with 16 points, Mumbai Indians are quietly optimistic. Their net run rate is the highest among the playoff contenders (+1.292), giving them a mathematical chance of breaking into the top two.
For that to happen, Mumbai need to defeat Punjab Kings in their final group game — which would simultaneously hurt PBKS’s top-two hopes and boost Mumbai’s. However, they also need at least one of RCB or Gujarat to falter.
Despite the permutations, Mumbai’s strong net run rate keeps them alive in this unpredictable race.
Updated Points Table – After Match on May 24, 2025:
Position | Team | Matches | Wins | Losses | No Result | Points | NRR |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Gujarat Titans | 13 | 9 | 4 | 0 | 18 | +0.602 |
2 | Punjab Kings | 13 | 8 | 4 | 1 | 17 | +0.327 |
3 | Royal Challengers | 13 | 8 | 4 | 1 | 17 | +0.255 |
4 | Mumbai Indians | 13 | 8 | 5 | 0 | 16 | +1.292 |
5 | Delhi Capitals | 14 | 7 | 6 | 1 | 15 | +0.011 |

10 | Chennai Super Kings | 13 | 3 | 10 | 0 | 6 | -1.030 |
What’s at Stake in the Final Round?
- Gujarat Titans: Win and finish 1st. Lose, and they risk slipping to 2nd or lower depending on net run rates.
- Punjab Kings: Must win well to ensure a top-two spot. A loss could knock them out of the top two altogether.
- RCB: A win keeps their top-two hopes alive. Need help from other results, especially a Punjab or GT loss.
- Mumbai Indians: Need to beat Punjab and hope RCB or GT lose. Their NRR gives them an edge if it goes down to decimal points.
As the league phase of IPL 2025 nears its climax, only Gujarat Titans have some breathing space. For everyone else in the top four, the battle is intense, the margins razor-thin, and the permutations mind-boggling. One thing is clear — the final matchday promises drama, tension, and perhaps heartbreak.
As we head into the last lap, buckle up — the IPL rollercoaster is far from done.
