KL Rahul England Test Series 2025 : As Indian cricket turns a fresh page following the Test retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the spotlight shifts to KL Rahul, a player expected to carry added responsibility in the upcoming Test series against England. Former Indian batter and seasoned analyst Aakash Chopra has directly appealed to Rahul: start strong, but more importantly, stay strong.
In a recent chat on JioStar, Chopra pointed out a pattern in Rahul’s Test career strong starts that gradually fade out as the series progresses. Referring to past tours of Australia, England, and South Africa, Chopra noted that while Rahul often opens with impressive knocks, his impact dwindles as the series wears on.
“When it comes to Rahul, I’ve observed that he begins well, but somewhere down the line, his form dips,” Chopra explained. “Whether it’s Australia, England, or South Africa, the story remains the same good starts but inconsistent finishes. Making 80 in the first game and 100 in the second doesn’t count for much if you end the series averaging 30.”
With stalwarts like Rohit and Kohli stepping aside from the longest format, Chopra believes this is Rahul’s best chance to emerge as a senior figure in the Test setup.
“This is the time to aim for series averages of 48 or 54, not just two big knocks followed by quiet performances,” he emphasized. “KL has the experience, and with Virat and Rohit gone, there’s a bigger role waiting for him. He was part of the last England series, too, so he knows what it takes. This time, the responsibility is heavier, and he has to deliver.”
Rahul, who has juggled between roles in all three formats, has recently spoken about his ambitions beyond red-ball cricket. In an interview with Nasser Hussain on Sky Sports, the Karnataka batter shared his desire to return to India’s T20I squad, with the 2026 T20 World Cup firmly in his plans.
“Of course, I want to be back in the T20I team. The World Cup is on my mind,” Rahul said candidly. “But at the moment, my focus is on enjoying my game and playing with freedom.”
Reflecting on the changes in T20 cricket, Rahul admitted the format has evolved rapidly in recent years.
“There was a time, maybe a year or so ago, when I realised the game was moving fast literally and tactically. Now it’s about the team that clears the boundary ropes more often. You can’t just play safe or smart anymore teams that don’t hit enough boundaries are ending up on the losing side.”
As Rahul balances his Test duties with hopes of a T20 comeback, the coming months could define his cricketing legacy. With India entering a transition phase in Tests and fierce competition in the white-ball squad, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
For the upcoming England Test series, KL Rahul isn’t just another player he’s one of the senior-most voices in the dressing room. Aakash Chopra’s message is clear: this is Rahul’s moment to show leadership, reliability, and consistency across the series, not just in bursts.
