D Gukesh’s brilliant comeback
In the first round of this tournament, Gukesh had to face defeat against Carlson. After that defeat, Carlson posted a mysterious message on social media, in which he said, “When you play against the king, you should not miss.” This message was a symbol of his dominance, but in the sixth round, Gukesh gave a befitting reply to it. Playing with white pieces, 19 -year -old Gukesh showed patience and discipline throughout the game. Carlson maintained an edge for most of the game, but in the tournament’s increment time control, which is like a rapid game, he came under pressure. Gukesh took advantage of this opportunity and reverted a rare mistake of Carlson and overturned the game. Finally, Gukesh won with an accurate counterant.
After the victory, Gukesh’s happiness could be seen clearly. In the lobby outside the ground, he met his long time coach Grazgarge Gajevsky and both celebrated the victory with a loud fist bump. Gajevsky later jokingly said that it was the strict fist bump for him ever. This victory was very special for Gukesh, as Carlson had earlier questioned his ability to perform under classical sports and pressure.
