Suryakumar Yadav 73 Not Out : In a must-win encounter under the lights at the Wankhede on Wednesday, Suryakumar Yadav’s sheer grit and elegance illuminated Mumbai Indians’ path to the IPL 2025 playoffs. His unbeaten 73 off 43 balls turned what seemed a tricky total into a match-winning cushion as Mumbai hammered Delhi Capitals by 59 runs to claim the fourth and final playoff spot.
The five-time champions, who had failed to reach the playoffs last season, delivered under pressure when it mattered most. At one stage, MI’s innings were unraveling on a sluggish Wankhede pitch, but Suryakumar held his nerve. His knock, laced with seven fours and six sixes, was not just fluent but also fearless — a timely reminder of why he’s still one of India’s premier white-ball batters.
Late Surge Turns the Game
The turning point? Undoubtedly, the final two overs of Mumbai’s innings. With the scoreboard reading a modest 133/5 at the end of 18 overs, Delhi looked to have successfully contained the damage. But Suryakumar, joined by youngster Naman Dhir (24 off 8 balls), launched an all-out assault. The pair plundered 48 runs in just 12 deliveries — five sixes and four boundaries — swinging the momentum brutally in Mumbai’s favour and setting Delhi a stiff 181-run target.
It was a vintage Wankhede finish — aggressive, dramatic, and emotionally charged.
Delhi Crumble in Powerplay Pressure
In reply, Delhi Capitals faltered right from the start. Without their regular skipper Axar Patel, the side looked disoriented, and the chase quickly turned into a collapse. Faf du Plessis, standing in as captain, fell for just 6 while the in-form KL Rahul, fresh off a hundred in his previous outing, departed for 11. Both batters failed to weather the early storm, undone by the movement and discipline of Boult and Chahar.
The top-order implosion left Delhi reeling at 30/3 within the powerplay, and there was no recovery. The rest of the innings was simply a formality.
Santner and Bumrah Slam the Door Shut
While the batters set the tone, it was Mumbai’s bowling unit that sealed the deal. Mitchell Santner was the standout performer, finishing with figures of 4-0-11-3. His scalps included Delhi’s highest scorer, Sameer Rizvi (39), along with Vipraj Nigam and Ashutosh Sharma. His tight lines and clever changes of pace made scoring virtually impossible in the middle overs.
Jasprit Bumrah, as ever, was clinical. He returned with 3/12 in 3.2 overs and struck crucial blows, including the key wicket of Tristan Stubbs. Bumrah’s ability to choke the runs and pick wickets at the death continues to be Mumbai’s biggest asset.
Delhi were eventually bowled out for just 121 in 18.2 overs, ending their campaign on a dismal note.
A Knock for the Ages
Suryakumar’s innings will be remembered not just for its statistical brilliance but for its context. On a pitch that offered turn and grip, where most batters struggled to find timing, he managed to construct an innings that had both class and carnage. His partnerships — a stabilizing 55-run stand with Tilak Varma and a thunderous 57-run finish with Dhir — defined Mumbai’s innings.
This performance wasn’t just about runs. It was about stepping up when your team needs you the most. That’s what makes great players, and Suryakumar Yadav once again proved why he’s cut from a different cloth.
What This Means
With this win, Mumbai Indians officially qualify for the IPL 2025 playoffs, joining the top three. Delhi, on the other hand, bow out of the tournament with more questions than answers. A promising start to their campaign eventually fizzled out due to inconsistent performances and a crumbling middle-order.
For MI, the road ahead is steep — the playoffs will be fiercely competitive — but with Suryakumar hitting peak form and the bowlers clicking at the right time, they’ll feel they belong exactly where they are.
