Mumbai New Cricket Stadium : Mumbai is preparing to up the ante in the race for world-class cricket stadiums. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has officially received a green signal from the Maharashtra government to build a brand-new stadium with a seating capacity of 1 lakh spectators.
This comes as a strategic response to Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, the largest cricket ground globally with a capacity of 1.32 lakh. Mumbai now has its sights set on becoming the home of the second-largest cricket stadium in the world.
During the inauguration ceremony of the newly renamed stands at Wankhede Stadium — in honor of Rohit Sharma, Ajit Wadekar, and Sharad Pawar — Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made the announcement that thrilled local cricket fans.
“Many people call Lord’s the home of cricket, but for us, that home is Wankhede,” Fadnavis said, paying tribute to cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar. “The God of Cricket resides here, and his statue at this stadium reminds us why Mumbai is the heartbeat of Indian cricket.”
The idea for a 1-lakh capacity stadium was first proposed by former MCA president Amol Kale and current president Ajinkya Naik. “They approached me with the vision,” Fadnavis revealed. “And I promised them, if MCA wants to make it happen, the government will ensure land is provided.”
The Chief Minister went on to say, “MCA will turn 100 in four years. By that milestone, we hope the new stadium is ready. The state government will give full cooperation — be it land, approvals, or infrastructure.”
Sources suggest that the new stadium will be located roughly 68 kilometers from the current Wankhede Stadium. Once completed, it will stand as a modern, world-class venue capable of hosting high-profile international matches and major ICC tournaments.
The announcement has sparked massive excitement in the cricketing circles of Mumbai. Already home to iconic venues like Wankhede, Brabourne, and DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai will now gain another jewel in its cricket crown.
