Mustafizur Rahman IPL 2025 : In a time when political tension between India and Pakistan is spilling over into the cricketing arena, the world is witnessing the impact on two of the most popular franchise leagues — the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL). A recent revelation by Bangladesh’s young spinner Rishad Hossain shed light on the uneasy atmosphere during the PSL, where international players like Daryl Mitchell and Tom Curran were reportedly on the verge of tears, anxious about their safety.
The ripple effect of these geopolitical disturbances has now reached the IPL as well. Although India is considered significantly safer than Pakistan — a fact acknowledged even by the most casual fans — logistical issues and safety concerns have created hurdles. Last week’s sudden suspension of the IPL due to scheduling and security complications has disrupted many players’ plans, with several now unable to return for the remainder of the tournament.
Among the franchises hit hard by this chaos is Delhi Capitals. Their explosive Australian opener, Jake Fraser-McGurk, has opted out of the remaining matches, citing personal reasons. Fraser-McGurk’s departure is a major setback for the Capitals, considering his form and impact this season. In response, the franchise has turned to a familiar face — Bangladesh’s star pacer Mustafizur Rahman — to fill the void.
Interestingly, Mustafizur went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction, with Delhi initially investing heavily in Australian spearhead Mitchell Starc. But with Starc’s participation now under a cloud due to Australia’s upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa at Lord’s, Delhi had to look for a reliable left-arm pace option. Mustafizur, with his wealth of IPL experience and calm head under pressure, fits the bill perfectly.
Mustafizur, affectionately known as “Fizz”, has a storied IPL career. He burst onto the scene in 2016 with Sunrisers Hyderabad, playing a pivotal role in their title-winning campaign. That season, he became the first overseas player to win the Emerging Player of the Tournament award. Since then, he has donned the jerseys of Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, and of course, Delhi Capitals in previous seasons. In 57 IPL appearances, he has picked up 61 wickets, showcasing his knack for breaking partnerships and bowling tight death overs.
Now, with a ₹6 crore contract for the remainder of IPL 2025, Mustafizur becomes Delhi’s third left-arm pacer, alongside Starc and India’s T Natarajan — although Starc’s availability remains uncertain. The Capitals, led by Axar Patel, are still in playoff contention with 13 points from 11 matches. They have three crucial games remaining — against Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians, and Punjab Kings — and need strong performances to secure a spot in the top four.
Notably, the IPL was suspended just before Delhi’s previous match, leaving players like Starc and his teammates needing to be transported from Dharamsala to Delhi via a special train arranged by the BCCI. The uncertainty around overseas players has added a new layer of complexity to an already dramatic IPL season.
With Mustafizur’s return, Delhi will hope for both experience and impact at a critical juncture. As political tension casts a shadow over cricketing affairs, the game must continue to adapt — and players like Mustafizur may just prove to be the key in helping their franchises weather the storm.
