Rohit Sharma Honored at Wankhede 2025 : Parents Inaugurate ‘Rohit Sharma Stand’ in Emotional Ceremony

Rohit Sharma Honored at Wankhede : In a heartwarming and emotional ceremony at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium, Indian ODI captain Rohit Sharma witnessed a once-in-a-lifetime moment as a stand was named in his honor — the ‘Rohit Sharma Stand’. But what made the occasion truly special was Rohit’s decision to call his parents, Mrs. Purnima and Mr. Gurunath Sharma, on stage to join him in inaugurating the stand that now bears his name.

Initially, it seemed like Rohit and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis were to press the ceremonial button together. But just as the moment arrived, Rohit stepped off the stage, walked toward the audience, and gently invited his parents to be a part of the event. The crowd cheered as Mr. and Mrs. Sharma joined their son and the Chief Minister on stage.

In a touching gesture, Mr. Fadnavis held Mr. Gurunath’s hand and guided it onto the button, and the trio pressed it together — setting off colorful smoke, fireworks, and unveiling two large posters of Rohit Sharma in his India colors. The Divecha Pavilion Level 3 officially became the ‘Rohit Sharma Stand’, a tribute by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to one of India’s most decorated cricketers and a true son of Mumbai.

“It’s unbelievable. What’s happening here today — I never even dreamt of something like this,” said Rohit, visibly moved, as he addressed the gathering. “Growing up as a boy wanting to play for Mumbai, to play for India, you never think of something like this. You just want to give your best, wear the jersey, and make your country proud.”

The decision to honor Rohit was taken at MCA’s 86th Annual General Meeting last month. And with the stand now bearing his name at his home ground, the moment was made even more poignant by his loved ones standing beside him.

Rohit’s wife, Ritika Sajdeh, watched the proceedings from the audience, her eyes welling up with pride and emotion. For a cricketer who’s given the country so many memorable moments — including his record-breaking five centuries in a single World Cup — this recognition was as personal as it was professional.

“To be honoured while I’m still playing makes it even more special,” Rohit continued. “I’ve retired from two formats, but I’m still playing one. To walk out here on the 21st against Delhi Capitals, representing Mumbai Indians, and see that stand — it’s going to be surreal.”

He also acknowledged the efforts of the MCA and its Apex Council: “I am truly thankful to every MCA member, and especially to the Apex Council for this incredible gesture.”

The ‘Hitman’, as he’s fondly called by fans, has created countless memories at Wankhede — from IPL triumphs with the Mumbai Indians to international centuries that brought crowds to their feet. And now, with his name etched into the stadium’s structure, a new chapter in his legacy has been written.

This wasn’t just a ceremony — it was a celebration of a career still unfolding, of a cricketer who’s not only inspired millions with his batting but also stayed grounded in his values and family roots.

As fans prepare to return to Wankhede on May 21, one thing is certain: the cheers for Rohit Sharma will be louder, the pride will be deeper, and the sight of his name on the stand will be a reminder of what dreams, hard work, and humility can truly achieve.
