Sai Sudharsan Test Debut 2025 : There’s a quiet determination in Sai Sudharsan’s voice—a sense of humility that doesn’t fade even as he reaches the biggest milestone of his career. After months of consistent performances across formats,be it the IPL or domestic cricket, the Tamil Nadu batter has been rewarded with a place in India’s Test squad for the England tour. And while the world celebrates his selection, Sudharsan is already thinking ahead.
“This is just the beginning. There’s still a lot of story left,” Sudharsan said, choosing his words with care. “Everyone around me has reminded me to stay grounded, to keep pushing.”
The call-up marks a significant moment in the 22-year-old’s career. From making a mark with his stylish strokeplay in the IPL for Gujarat Titans, to shining for India ‘A’ in the red-ball format, Sudharsan has quietly built a resume that selectors couldn’t ignore. On Saturday, the official call arrived—he was now part of India’s senior Test squad. The dream of playing Test cricket, one that started on local grounds in Chennai, was finally within touching distance.
“Playing for the country is a huge honour,” Sudharsan said ahead of Gujarat’s final IPL league match against Chennai. “It feels surreal. I still can’t believe it. Every cricketer dreams of playing Test cricket. That’s the ultimate goal.”
As news of his selection spread, the first people he reached out to were those who had walked this journey with him. His parents, brother, close friends. “I did a video call with them. I could see it in their faces—how proud and happy they were. That moment was special,” he said.
But from celebration to reality, the transition has to be quick. The IPL will conclude soon, and England’s red-ball challenge looms. Adjusting from white-ball to red-ball cricket can be tricky, but Sudharsan isn’t fazed.
“It takes some time, of course. But I believe in keeping things simple,” he said. “Even off the field, I try to build my focus. That kind of mental training helps on the field. The more you can concentrate, the better your game becomes.”
He isn’t preoccupied with where he might bat—whether he opens or slots in at No. 3. That’s a call he’s happy to leave to the team management. “I enjoy both roles. I haven’t made any personal choice yet. I’ll prepare myself mentally to play wherever the coaches want me to.”
Interestingly, his first Test experience might come under the leadership of a very familiar face—Shubman Gill. The two have opened together for Gujarat Titans in the IPL, and Sudharsan has seen Gill’s growth up close.
“I’ve watched his rise over the last four years. He’s incredibly gifted. His skills are unquestionable,” he said with admiration. “He’ll bring great pride to the country, I’m sure. And for me, it’s special that I’ll be playing under him in my first Test series.”
In a sport that often celebrates noise, Sudharsan’s calm voice is a refreshing contrast. He’s not here to make headlines with brash statements. He’s here to quietly build something long-lasting.
And if the beginning is anything to go by, this story has a lot more chapters to unfold.
