Shreyas Iyer Ignored for India ‘A’ Tour to England : The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 18-member squad for the India ‘A’ team’s upcoming tour of England on Friday night. However, one name that stood out by its absence was that of Shreyas Iyer. Given his recent impressive performances in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL), this omission has sparked significant debate among fans and experts alike.
Shreyas Iyer has been in remarkable form lately. He played a crucial role in leading his team to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and was India’s highest run-scorer in the recent Champions Trophy. His IPL performances have also been commanding, making him a key player in the Punjab Kings lineup. With such credentials, many expected him to be either part of the India ‘A’ squad or even the senior national team for the England series.
Initially, it was assumed that since Punjab Kings are performing well in the IPL, Iyer might skip the ‘A’ tour to focus on IPL and potentially earn a place in the senior team. But insiders suggest that he is unlikely to be included in the main squad either, raising questions about the selection strategy.
A source close to the BCCI shared insights with a leading national newspaper, explaining that the conditions in England demand a specific skill set that the selectors believe Iyer is still working to develop. “If this series were hosted in India, Iyer might have gotten an opportunity. But playing abroad, especially in England where seam and swing bowling dominate, the selectors are hesitant. They feel he needs more experience in red-ball cricket,” said the source.
The source also pointed out that even with improvements in limited-overs cricket, adapting to Test match requirements remains a challenge. “In England, players must know which balls to leave as well as how to handle the swing. That discipline is crucial,” the insider added.
Interestingly, this reasoning also applies to Shubman Gill, who has struggled with leaving deliveries in foreign conditions and holds an average of just 26.36 in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia). Yet, Gill has been given early entry and leadership responsibilities in the Test squad, which has led to criticism and claims of inconsistency in selection policies.
As IPL fans continue to watch Iyer’s strong performances, this omission from the India ‘A’ squad and uncertainty about his future in the senior team leaves many wondering if the selectors are making the right call. For now, Iyer’s focus remains on delivering in the IPL, but this selection snub could impact his ambitions in the longer formats.
Only time will tell whether this gamble pays off, but the current situation certainly fuels ongoing debates about fairness and the future of Indian cricket’s middle order.
