Everyone was eyeing Gill in this first match of the Test series being played in the headingley. With this Test series, the journey of his Test captaincy started. But before this, his Test record was very bad in countries outside Asia including England. Due to this, everyone wanted to see whether Gill improves his record under the pressure of captaincy. Such a century for the first time in career
This century of Gill was special in many ways because not only did he make some special records, but also responded to critics. Before this innings, Gill did not get even a half -century in any Test match outside Asia in the last four and a half years. He had failed in the last 18 innings. But this time not only crossed the 50 mark, but also scored his first Test century outside Asia. At the same time, this is his only second century on foreign land. Earlier in December 2022, he had hit hundreds of against Bangladesh in Chitgaon.
The youngest Indian captain to score a century in his debut
If we talk about records, then he became the youngest Indian captain to score a century in the first innings in the captaincy debut match. He broke the record of Virat Kohli (26 years, 34 days) by doing this amazing at the age of just 25 years 285 days. At the same time, he is the fourth youngest captain to do so in the whole world. Not only this, he is only the fourth Indian to score a century in Captaincy Debut. Before him, Vijay Hazare (1951), Sunil Gavaskar (1976) and Kohli (2014) also did this wonders. Overall, he is the 23rd such batsman who scored a century in the Test captaincy debut innings.
