Virat Kohli Set to Retire from Test Cricket, BCCI Urges Reconsideration Ahead of England Tour
Virat Kohli Test Retirement : In a dramatic and emotional development, the Indian icon of Virat Kohli reported to the Cricket Control Council in India (BCCI) of his intention to retire from test cricket. According to an Indian Express report, Kohli made the difficult decision after a prolonged period of introspection, marking what could be the end of an era in Indian red-ball cricket.
While the BCCI has asked the talismanic maestro to reconsider his choice, especially with England’s high-risk tour of the corner in June, there was no indication that Kohli is willing to overturn his decision.
The move comes on the heels of another great retirement in Indian cricket, with skipper Rohit Sharma, who announced his exit from the longest format earlier this week. Rohit published his decision via an Instagram post, thanked fans, and stated that he would continue to represent India on a day’s international.
Kohli’s contemplation to move away from the test kit is allegedly back to the Border-Gavaskar trophy in December 2024, a series where the 35-year-old struggled to find rhythm with the bat. Even though she started the series with a commanding unbeaten century in the first test – a performance that helped India secure an early gain – Kohli’s form quickly tapered off. He only managed 190 runs over five tests, with the lone century as the only remarkable contribution.
This performance dive is not an isolated incident. Over the past five years, Kohli’s numbers in test cricket have had a significant decline. In the last 37 games, he has only accumulated 1,990 races on a modest average, managing only three centuries in that period – a strong contrast to the consistent domain he displayed at the beginning of his career.
Kohli did not shy away from discussing the mental and emotional toll of his thin. Speaking of an event for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in March, the former Indian Capitão shared ideas about the psychological challenges of being out of shape.
“When you start taking on the energy and disappointment from the outside, you start to burden yourself more … and then you start thinking about things, like'”‘ I have two or three days left on this trip, I have to have an impact now. And you start to get more desperate. This is something I probably also tried in Australia, “said Kohli.
Despite the recent decline in number, Kohli’s contribution to Indian test kick is monumental. In 123 test matches he scored 9,230 races an average of 46.85, including 29 centuries. He stands as the fifth tallest race scorer in the history of the Border-Gavaskar series and has helped to redefine India’s approach to testing cricket-boat as a pipe and a former captain.
Kohli’s retirement, whose confirmed, will mark the end of a golden chapter in Indian cricket history. Together with Rohit Sharma, his exit would leave a significant void in India’s test group, both in terms of experience and management.
Until now, the BCCI has continued to discuss Kohli in an attempt to convince them to continue, at least until the end of the England tour. However, without clear signs of reversion, the cricketing world may be on the verge of witnessing one of the most emotional farewells in recent memory.
