As the countdown begins for the West Indies tour of England, the ECB has announced two revamped white-ball squads led by Harry Brook, who steps into his first full-time leadership role following Jos Buttler’s transition out of captaincy. With the shadow of a disappointing Champions Trophy campaign still looming, England are seeking redemption and stability in both the ODI and T20I formats.
The series kicks off on May 29 at Edgbaston, marking the beginning of a new chapter for England’s white-ball side, and a significant one for Brook, who will now be at the helm after England’s winless outing in Pakistan earlier this year.
New Faces, Old Warriors Return for Redemption
One of the most notable inclusions in the ODI squad is Jofra Archer, making a long-awaited return after injury setbacks. Archer, who was England’s X-factor during their 2019 World Cup triumph, joins a pace battery that includes Gus Atkinson, Saqib Mahmood, and Jamie Overton.
In the spin department, Tom Hartley has been entrusted with the frontline left-arm spinner role in the 50-over format, while Adil Rashid, the evergreen leg-spinner, retains his place at 37. Rehan Ahmed, his young protégé, will feature exclusively in the T20I squad.
Meanwhile, Liam Dawson’s inclusion in the T20I setup is a heartening comeback story. After nearly three years away from T20 internationals, Dawson’s recent domestic and franchise form – including title-winning seasons in the SA20 – has earned him another shot at the international level.
Livingstone Out, Jacks & Banton In
There are some high-profile omissions as well. Liam Livingstone has been axed from both squads following a string of poor performances during the Champions Trophy, where he managed just 33 runs. His exit opens the door for Will Jacks, who returns with a point to prove in both formats. Tom Banton, too, keeps his place after stepping in for Jacob Bethell in the Champions Trophy squad, and now retains faith from selectors in both formats.
Phil Salt, on the other hand, has been dropped from the ODI squad, with selectors seemingly unimpressed by his inability to translate his T20 success into the longer white-ball format.
Fitness Boosts for Carse and Potts
On the fast-bowling front, England have welcomed back Brydon Carse, who has recovered from a toe injury. He is named in both squads alongside Matthew Potts, who has recently been active with the Test squad and now returns to the white-ball mix.
Club vs Country Drama Looms
However, preparations for the West Indies tour of England may be complicated by IPL 2025’s unexpected extension. With the final now rescheduled to June 3, several key England players — including Jos Buttler (Gujarat Titans), Jacob Bethell (RCB), and Will Jacks (Mumbai Indians) — face potential scheduling conflicts. If their respective franchises make the playoffs, these players could miss at least the first two ODIs.
Despite that uncertainty, England have opted for continuity over chaos. Joe Root remains a key figure in the ODI setup, adding experience to a batting unit that will need to fire early in Brook’s tenure. Jamie Smith is also included in the 50-over squad as a potential wicketkeeper-batter option.
Brook Era Begins: A Test of Leadership
For Harry Brook, the West Indies tour of England represents both a challenge and an opportunity. Taking over full-time leadership in the aftermath of Jos Buttler’s mixed stint, Brook’s early captaincy decisions — including adapting to potential IPL-driven absences — will be closely scrutinized.
While England’s recent form raises questions, the squad announcements suggest a renewed commitment to blending youth and experience. With both squads featuring a healthy mix of emerging talent and seasoned performers, fans can expect an exciting and possibly transitional series.
