On 7 July 2025, South Africa’s all -rounder Vian Mulder (367 runs) scored a brilliant triple century against Zimbabwe. He had reached very close to the record of scoring 400 runs in an innings of Brian Lara, when he declared the innings. In that Test match, the Mulder was also captaining the team. The great West Indies player Brian Lara wanted the Mulder to break his record, but the Mulder did not do so, but there was a time when Lara’s sleep was blown away after breaking a record. He disclosed this during an interview. In which he told that at midnight, his agent called and heard such a news to me, which made me sleep.
What was that news?
Former West Indies captain Brian Lara appeared in Lara the Overlap Cricket YouTube show a few days ago. During this, he told that this thing is in the year 2003. I was sleeping in Jamaica at night. At midnight, my agent and lawyer got a call. He told me that you should call a person. I asked why? Then the agent told me that one of your records has just been broken. On this, I called in Australia’s dressing room. There was a lot of noise there. I talked to Matthew Hayden and congratulated him, but after that I was sleepy.
In 2003, Matthew Hayden broke the record of Brian Lara’s highest personal score in Test cricket. This Australian veteran had left Lara’s record of 375 runs against Zimbabwe in Perth for 380 runs. This was the first time in more than 45 years when a non-West Indies batsman made a record of the highest score in Test cricket. During his innings, Hayden also hit 38 fours and 11 sixes.
Received his place again in 6 months
Lara scored 375 runs against England in 1994, which Hayden broke, but then the west Indies’ plan was different. In 2004, Lara again achieved her record by playing an unbeaten 400 -run innings against England in Antigua. West Indies scored 751 for 5 wickets in 202 overs thanks to Lara’s unbeaten 400 runs.
Lara completed his century from 131 balls, his double century off 260 balls and his triple century from 404 balls. Six months after losing his record of the highest test score, Lara re -achieved it with a spectacular sweep off the ball of spinner Gareth Barry, leading him to ahead of Hayden’s record of 380 runs. He remained unbeaten by scoring 400 runs off 582 balls.
