Cricket Australia confirmed the squad on Tuesday, which includes the return of all-rounder Cameron Green following back surgery, and the selection of spinner Matt Kuhnemann for the first time since the subcontinent tours.

Captain Pat Cummins will lead a side that closely resembles the team which dominated Sri Lanka and India last season. The squad also features a mix of proven performers and fresh talent, setting the stage for a thrilling contest as Australia aims to become the first team to win two World Test Championship finals.

Green Returns, Kuhnemann Gets the Nod

Cameron Green’s return adds depth to the Australian lineup, offering pace, control, and solid lower-order batting. His recovery from a back injury that had kept him out of action for several months is a significant boost for the Aussies as they prepare to face a strong South African outfit.

Meanwhile, left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann makes a return to the red-ball setup, having impressed in the domestic season. With conditions at Lord’s often favoring spin in the later days of a Test match, Kuhnemann’s inclusion offers tactical flexibility.

Doggett Named Travelling Reserve

One of the few surprises in the announcement was the inclusion of Sheffield Shield Final Player of the Match, Brendan Doggett, as a travelling reserve. His consistent performances for Queensland earned him a spot alongside the established pace attack of Cummins, Hazlewood, Starc, and Boland.

After injury setbacks earlier in the year, both Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood have returned to full fitness, with both regaining form during the IPL. Their return solidifies Australia’s pace battery, which will play a key role in English conditions.

Chair of selectors George Bailey expressed confidence in the squad, citing the successful home summer and subcontinent victories as major achievements leading into the final.

“The team finished the WTC cycle with an impressive series victory in Sri Lanka following an equally strong summer in defeating India for the first time in a decade,” Bailey said.

“Those series capped a consistent performance across the two-year cycle and now presents us with the incredibly exciting opportunity to defend the World Test Championship.”

Bailey also emphasized the group’s excitement at reaching another final:

“It means a lot to the group to reach the final, and they are very much looking forward to the challenge South Africa will present at Lord’s.”

Caribbean Tour to Follow

The same squad will also feature in the subsequent three-Test tour of the Caribbean. Young all-rounder Beau Webster has retained his place after a promising start to his Test career. Meanwhile, Sam Konstas, who left Sri Lanka early last summer to finish the domestic season with New South Wales, is also back in the mix.
